Tufa Towers from Mono Lake last weekend. These structures are made up entirely of Calcium Carbonate and react from underground springs welling up in the lake. Go back in time to 1940s, these towers would’ve been completely submerged under water. LA started draining some water for uses and depleted the water levels so much that the water line fell almost 1000 feet. Sad but still very cool to observe!
Fun fact: Mono Lake has the salinity THREE TIMES that of the Pacific Ocean. No fish, but brine shrimp inhabit the lake by the trillions. Here’s one of those little guys. These serve as food to migratory bird species that stop at Mono before finishing their journey south.
